The First Neurological Simulation Center in Italy Opened

A manikin, or better, a robot able to exactly reproduce both the external and the internal anatomy of a human being along with her main responses. A virtually perfect machine, aimed at unprecedented didactic purposes. Italy’s first virtual neurology hospital has opened on October 14, 2010 at IRRCS, the National Neurological Institute “Casimiro Mondino”, the first center in the country devoted to Simulation in neurology. Nasce a Pavia il primo ospedale Neurologico virtuale d’Italia. ( Read the story of Kaspar, the robot exploited by researchers of Hertfordshire University to treat autism).

It will make it possible to give virtual lessons to improve the management of urgent neurological cases, starting from diagnosis to advanced (even invasive) treatments. Around this robot, a funding of about 100,000 Euros in advanced technology, courses for physicians, nurses and students of the Faculty of Medicine will be organized.

At Mondino Istitute, a true control room has been put on, that allows to control the simulator, record and show simulation sessions that can be later discussed with istructors, so as to improve teamwork and, in particular, cut down error probability. CESMO (Centro di Simulazione Mondino, Mondino Simulation Center) is supported by SIMMED (Società Italiana di Simulazione in Medicina, Italian Society of Simulation in Medicine), and has been provided with hi-fidelity technology associated with the simulator. The robot can reproduce and show clinical signs and symptoms such as pupil dilation, eye blinking, cyanosis around mouth, bruises and bleeding, as well as a truthful response to drug administration of different dosage. The use of this simulator, which can be programmed with several provided physiological profiles, allows to learn what to do to manage both repetitive events and emergency situations with no danger for patients.

The center is provided with simulation areas containing an adult-patient simulator and an audio-video monitoring system, a control room with the software to control the simulator and a system to record and deliver signals, a plenary room for debriefing with a network of PCs and a sound system. CESMO reproduces in a realistic way the organizational and architectural features of a real hospital, where students, interns, physicians and nurses can deal with daily therapeutic issues. The simulation methodology is based on the use of patient simulators to organize practical sessions, as well as on the adption of eLearning platforms to promote follow-up and individual learning.

“The main pillar of education by simulation – doctor Giuseppe Micieli, supervisor of the Center, says – is that of adopting techniques and test your abilities without harming anybody. Try to fail. And Fail to learn. In addition to the possibility to recreate virtual situations, simulation gives the chance of recording and showing what happened, so as to find teamwork strengths and weaknesses so as to fix wrong procedures. Recordings can be also watched live by other learners so as to possibly discuss actions to be improved, as regards both technical and relational standpoints.”
Courses targetet at interns usually last for one day and are attented by 18 participants. Professionals can follow advanced courses where they are faced with problems and complex techniques, as unforeseen responses to drugs and care of high-risk patients.

“This chance – dr.ssa Moneta, dean of Mondino Institute, highlights – is crucial non only for the Foundation, but also for the whole Pavia province, and the external areas that can so exploit novel technological instruments.” The Institute, devoted to education, aims at overcoming its borders so as to get integrated with other institutes and offer a novel model with a huge didactic impact through advanced technologies, that could be also exported and attractive to other professionals and students.
